Wild Cards! – Oct 4, 2021

Krazy Pic 1  “We Cater Any Event”.  It looks like there’s no hyperbole there!!

Krazy Pic 2  Having trouble counting from 12 to 15?  Looks like Coca-Cola thinks we all need remedial math!

Cartoon of the Week Herman has always been a cartoon favorite of mine – it’s just so off-the-wall.  This one made me laugh out loud!

Today in History  Sputnik I was launched in 1957!  Quite the event for those of us alive then!  Here are some more significant events from October 4.

Brain Teasers  Another new group of possibly-brain-teaser-seekers joins us this week.  Welcome to members of MSU’s SM2TO group of future math teachers!  Three more BTs and one more new Bonus (bringing us to 9 and 3 so far) this time.  So SURELY at least one will grab you!!  Send in your solutions and join the fun!

October Birthdays We listed these last time, but it didn’t feel like October then, and we have almost a dozen new subscribers this week!, so here they are again.  At least the ones we know.

Magical Technology Memory Tour  Back in the early/mid 50s, I remember that my grandfather swore he’d never get – or even need – one of those new-fangled television sets.  This lasted until he discovered he could watch his beloved baseball on it.  This memory prompted my own memory tour through the technology changes of my life – and how I almost channeled my grandfather!  The column first appeared in May 2020.

Wild Cards! – Sep 20, 2021

Krazy Pic 1  I do indeed like both of these food items!  But, together?!

Krazy Pic 2  Have you been slacking off a little on the housecleaning?  Here’s a reason to continue slacking off!

Cartoon of the Week  Foxtrot is always good for a laugh!  Here’s his battle plan for fighting summer mosquitos!

FBI Scam I like to think I’m pretty good at spotting possible e-mail scams. (Not such a good record on phone, but I digress.)  I’m having trouble thinking anyone could be taken by this one.    Shared by e-mail from subscriber Richard Barger, who actually received this.

Follow Ups from Last Mailing  Perhaps it was something I ate?  Here’s a weird collection loose ends from our previous Mailing (Sep 6):

Solutions and Solvers – Omission and Correction I entirely skipped BT #6 and accepted another perfectly good alternate solutions to #13.  So, I’m reposting the Solutions & Solvers to the last set of BTs.

Rainbow Bird? 🙁  Remember the picture of the Rainbow Bird last time, and the last minute fear it may have been photoshopped?  Turns out it probably was.  Two subscribers, one of them my bird-expert friend, Marvin Dejong, identified it as a photoshopped bluejay body. (Another, Christine Porter, also sent a link to another (real) bird beauty!)   Check the link for the bird-that-could-have-been OR Christine’s link, OR just  ‘admire’ the good job of photoshopping.

Cartoon Glitch?  No one specificallty notified me of this (which usually happens), but I suspect there may have been trouble with the cartoon link (or website) last time.  🙁   Just in case, here’s a repeat of another ZITS favorite for your viewing pleasure.  (Fairly recent, but perhaps still funny?)

Brain Teasers Once again this time, there are three (3) new fun BTs and one new Bonus for your puzzle solving pleasure!  Grab a pencil and join us!

October Birthdays Yeah, it seems early to me, too, but by next Mailing, we’ll have at least two birthday among our subscribers!  Here’s the list of other October birthdays of subscribers (at least the ones we know).  (It’s one of our longest lists!)

The Magic of a Story:  Some Educational Parables   Some short make-you-think stories about education, woven with some memories from a spiritual mentor.  A former column, first shared in January 2019.

Wild Cards! – Sep 6, 2021

Krazy Pic 1  I can hear it now, “Honey, did you refill the soap dispenser?”  I want to hear his answer!  🙂

Krazy Pic 2  Somehow, one gets the feeling that there’s been confusion on this before.

Cartoon of the Week  I suspect I’ve mentioned my growing affinity for the ZITS comic strip.  Here, a teenager learns a valuable lesson (It takes a few seconds to load.)

Amazing ‘Rainbow Bird’!  This popped up on a FB page this past week, and I was just blown away!!  We’ve all seen colorful birds (painted buntings, perhaps?), but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one with every color of the rainbow (plus white and black), from head to toe!!  This one is just breathtakingly beautiful to me.

Old BTs: Solutions and Solvers  Here is the Summary of all the Solutions and Solvers from the last set of BTs (Jul/Aug)

New BTs: Sep/Oct  Three new Brain Teasers to start us off (including one designed for a new set of subscribers!), and one Bonus.  The fun begins again – grab a pencil and join in!

Pluto, Scientists, . . . and the Arts?!  ( ‘sabbatical’ from my column-writing extends another month – still not sure what’s ahead. In the meantime, I’ll continue to share some previous columns from the archives.)  After NASA’s Pluto fly-by (6 years ago?!), some comments from a columnist that I don’t always agree with led to these thoughts (surprisingly?) on the importance of the arts, as well as the sciences.

Wild Cards! – Aug 23, 2021

Krazy Pic 1  I really don’t think this is going to work!  Who says spelling is not important?!

Krazy Pic 2  I thought I knew where this post was going,, but, whoops!  Instead,  I broke out laughing!

Cartoon of the Week  My wife and I enjoy the Pickles comic strip and the couple in it, even though (partly because?) they sound too much like us sometimes!  We both laughed at this one from Saturday, 8/14.

A Modern Jonah??  This lobster diver says a humpback whale scooped him into his mouth, and then spit him back out!  Sounds ‘fishy’ (I know, I know – they’re mammals), but he appears to have witnesses!

Anniversaries in 2021  I ran across this while hunting for something else.  Some of these ten anniversaries go way back and are fascinating.  Not all, but it’s worth sharing anyway – especially with all the smaller ‘bonus’ anniversaries.

Brain Teasers  Who’d thunk it?!  The US Post Office getting into the Brain Teaser game?!  Check out this new BT (among the others), send in some solutions, and then go purchase your next sheet of stamps!  (This is your last chance on these BTs.  Watch for a new set next time.)

Microfiction?  i’ve gone from jublilant to despondent!  🙂  Despite all the apparent interest, I’ve gotten no 100-word stories for our collection!  🙁   What can I do to cajole you?  Check this out and give it some consideration!!  If I don’t get any responses this time, I’ll (reluctantly) put it away for awhile.

September Birthdays  Can September really be a week or so away?!  Here is a list of subscribers (known to us, at least) that have September birthdays.

Column  (My two month ‘sabbatical’ from my column-writing is almost over – still not sure what’s ahead. In the meantime, I’ll continue to share some previous columns from the archives.)  A favorite pet peeve of mine – losing perspective on calculators in particular and technology in general.  A feature piece in our local paper grabbed my attention and stirred me up.  🙂  It led to this column (first shared in this space in Nov ’16)  Big Chief Tablets, Square Roots, and Calculators.

Wild Cards! – Aug 9, 2021

Krazy Pic 1 I’ve had this in my files for a long time, but this past weekend, while traveling to a funeral, I actually saw this exact situation out on the road.  Apparently no job is too small! 🙂

Krazy Pic 2  I’m not sure this is exactly a ‘Krazy Pic’ (what do you think?), but . . .   One can CERTAINLY understand the lament here.

Cartoon of the Week While we’re on our ‘not exactly usual’ theme . . . Every past, present, or future WISE parent will smile at this one!

Microfiction! Shall I be encouraged?!  I hope so!!  There was apparently a lot of interest in this last time (3 dozen clicks or so, I think), and I know of at least one story written (which I think is being submitted!)  Try this out for fun!!  I’m anxious for all of us to write a book together!!  (And of course, if you missed it last time, you can catch the world’s most touching six-word story!)

‘Mac & Cheese’ Ice Cream?!?  just can’t imagine this, but it’s apparently now hard to get!!  Really?!  Fun news piece. 🙂

Brain Teasers  FOUR new BTs this time, including a cry for help (for which you can receive BT credit!!)  Am I going nuts?  Join the fun and/or help me out – either way it counts as a submission!

A Tale of Two Classrooms  I’m taking a two month ‘sabbatical’ from my column-writing to see if I want to continue that gig. In the meantime, I’ll share some previous columns from the archives.  This selection first appeared here in Summer 2015.  It describes the two (math) classes in which I learned the most and the least.  Which do you think was more stressful? A Tale of Two Classrooms.
