Cuzco, Peru

Once the capital of the Inca Empire, Cuzco sits in the Andes at an elevation of over 11,000 feet (more than two Denvers!  Takes some adjusting!)  The scene above is the Plaza de Armas (main square) featuring the Church of the Society of Jesus.  Construction on this church was begun in 1576.  Taken in May 2016.

Wild Cards! – Feb 21, 2022

Krazy Pic 1  Too little too late??  I guess we’ve been warned.

Krazy Pic 2  I’ve used this before, but I saw it again recently and decided it needed a rerun.  I love the colors, but what a spooky illusion!  🙂 I’m not sure I could force myself to enter – could you?

Cartoon of the Week  Most of us are old enough to have been here.  Would this have helped?

What is the Tao Te Ching?!  If you have/had never heard of The Tao Te Ching, you’re not alone!  In case you missed it above, here is an overview.  FLASH GIVEAWAY!!  Click the previous link, read the post, and then click at the bottom of that page and you’ll be entered in a FLASH GIVEAWAY for a FREE BOOK – Results announced in the next Mailing (Mar 7)

Brain Teasers Updates   I apologize, The story is too long, but the usual Summary of Solvers and Solutions will have to wait until next time, along with some new Brain Teasers.  In the meantime, take another chance to look at the existing BTs and Bonuses and submit a solution or two (or more!)

March Birthdays Hard to believe it’ll be March when the next Mailing comes around.  Here then are the March subscriber birthdays (that we know of).

Longer School Years? I forgot to check the date, but I think this column was back in 2015 or 16.  A letter to the editor was suggesting (in light of missed school days – and in general) that school years should be longer.  I had sent a response, and then later, edited it slightly and used it for one of my columns:  Lengthening the School Year?

Quote(s) for the Week

“The shoe that fits one person pinches another. There is no recipe for living that suits all cases.”

Carl Jung

Bonus Fun Quote for the Week

“[Old Western] movie cowboys mystify me – how can they jump off a porch roof and onto a horse, and still sing in a normal voice?”

Bob Hope

It’s SNOW Use Dreaming of Spring!

We didn’t get quite this much snow this past week, but it was close.  We got even more back in Winter of ’99 or ’00, when this was taken.  Hope everyone stayed dry and warm!

The New Book! – February 2022

The New Book is Finally Done!?!

As you know, I’ve been teasing a new book for awhile now.  Most glitches are now gone, and we will start shipping soon.  The good news is that the book is DONE and is being printed as we speak!!  The bad news is that it seems to be stuck in the supply chain quicksand, and I’m still at least a week (or likely more?) away from receiving my own first copies, though it’s already “available” on Amazon and Barnes & Noble!)

Partly to build interest and suspense, but mostly due to ongoing glitches, I’ve been somewhat quiet on this one.  If you don’t know what I’ve been working on, you’ll never guess.  It’s my third entirely new topic, but it’s one I’ve been interested in (and inspired by) for over a decade.

The small Chinese book The Tao Te Ching is a book about “The Way of things”.  It’s essentially a non-religious “manual for everyday living” [Stephen Mitchell, one of the translators used], as practical in today’s 21st century as it was in China in 500 BC. It’s been translated more than any other book in the world except the Bible.  A practical side-effect of this (and the Chinese language itself) is that transations can be extremely – sometimes frustratingly – different, especially to this interested reader.

LONG STORY SHORT:  In a(nother?) time of temporary insanity, over a year ago, I decided that someone should complile a side-by-side collection of some of these to provide a larger variety of perspectives on this classic’s verses.  And lo and behold, this book is the result of that insanity. I don’t expect a large audience for this, of course :-), but I’ve had fun [or sorts!] working on it – it’s been a labor of love as well as pain.

You can see the cover and read more about it by clicking here.

As we get geared up for signing/shipping copies (hopefully soon now!), watch for the usual “AME Discounts” and other perks  in future mailings (Retail is $18.95).  In the meantime, if you have questions (or want to reserve your copy!), feel free to let me know!
